William Parker

William Parker is one of the most important bassists in free jazz, a bandleader, composer, and writer who has anchored the New York avant-garde since the 1970s. Born in 1952 in the Bronx, he emerged through the city's loft-jazz scene and spent more than a decade in Cecil Taylor's ensembles, a partnership that shaped his powerful, deeply rooted approach to the instrument. In 1981 he founded the Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra, and across the following decades he built a vast catalog for AUM Fidelity and his own Centering Records imprint. His playing favors a big, singing tone and a rhythmic gravity drawn from the spiritual and improvisational traditions of the music, and he has remained a central collaborator across generations of players. The Village Voice named him the most consistently brilliant free jazz bassist of all time.
