Vito Dieterle

Vito Dieterle is a tenor saxophonist rooted in bebop and straight ahead jazz whose sound has been compared to a mix of Sonny Stitt and Stan Getz. A Chicago native, he was playing around that city by his mid teens alongside players such as Ira Sullivan and Von Freeman before moving to New York for the New School jazz program, where he studied with Arnie Lawrence, Barry Harris and Lee Konitz. Beginning in 2005 he led a weekly band at Little Branch and curated the bar's music programming, and he spent years as a member of Ethan Lipton and His Orchestra, recording five albums with the group and sharing in its Obie Award. With pianist Joel Forrester he recorded Status Sphere, a duo album pairing Thelonious Monk tunes with originals written in Monk's spirit. He is a partner at the Gramercy club Midnight Blue, where he performs and curates the music.
