Tommy Campbell

Tommy Campbell is a jazz drummer whose career has placed him behind some of the musics defining bandleaders, among them Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, and John McLaughlin. Born in 1957 near Philadelphia and a nephew of the Hammond B3 organ great Jimmy Smith, he studied at Berklee College of Music, where he led a band that included Kevin Eubanks. After joining Dizzy Gillespies big band he went on to record and tour widely, working with Gary Burton, Makoto Ozone, and Stanley Jordan. He settled in New York in 1988 and has since appeared with the Manhattan Transfer, David Murray, and the Mingus Big Band while leading his own groups.
