Sara Caswell

Sara Caswell is one of the foremost jazz violinists of her generation, known for a lyrical, singing tone and fluent improvising that bridge the jazz and classical traditions. Based in New York City, she is a longtime member of the chamber jazz group 9 Horses alongside mandolinist Joseph Brent, and has performed and recorded with Esperanza Spalding and David Krakauer. Raised in a musical family in Bloomington, Indiana, she studied classical violin with Josef Gingold at Indiana University while learning jazz from David Baker and John Blake Jr., and completed a master's degree in jazz violin at the Manhattan School of Music in 2006. She received a 2018 Grammy nomination for Best Improvised Jazz Solo and has led three albums under her own name, including The Way to You (2023, Anzic Records). Caswell also serves on the faculties of Berklee College of Music, the Manhattan School of Music, the New School, and New York University.
