Nasheet Waits

Nasheet Waits is one of the most in-demand drummers in modern jazz, prized for the elastic, melodic touch he brings to the kit. Born in New York City in 1971, he was raised in the Westbeth artists' community as the son of percussionist Freddie Waits, and went on to study at Morehouse College and Long Island University, where Michael Carvin brought him into the percussion ensemble M'Boom co-founded by his father and Max Roach. He is an originating member of pianist Jason Moran's Bandwagon trio with bassist Tarus Mateen, a group JazzTimes hailed as one of the most exciting rhythm sections in jazz. Waits also anchors the collective trio Tarbaby with Orrin Evans and Eric Revis, and held long tenures in the bands of Andrew Hill and Fred Hersch. He has recorded and toured with Jackie McLean, Joe Lovano, Geri Allen, Joshua Redman, and Mark Turner, among many others.
