Michael Attias

Michaël Attias is an alto saxophonist and composer whose work sits where jazz, free improvisation and chamber writing meet. Born in Haifa in 1968 and raised first in Paris and then in Minneapolis, he settled in New York in 1994 and became a fixture of the city's improvised music community. He made his leader debut with Credo in 2005, and has since led the pianoless trio Renku, the quartet documented on Nerve Dance (2017), and the solo saxophone and piano project échos la nuit (2019). He has played and recorded with Anthony Braxton, Paul Motian and Oliver Lake, and from 2003 to 2008 he curated the Nights of the Ravished Limbs new music series at Barbès in Brooklyn. He received a New York Foundation for the Arts artists' fellowship in 2000 and has held fellowships at the MacDowell arts colony.
