Marvin Sewell

Marvin Sewell is a Chicago-born guitarist whose blues-rooted, texturally varied playing has anchored the bands of many leading jazz artists. He came up in Chicago and studied at the Chicago Musical College at Roosevelt University before settling in New York City in 1990. From 1995 he spent six years in Cassandra Wilson's band, serving as her music director and co-writing "Right Here, Right Now" for her 1999 album Traveling Miles. He has also recorded and toured with Jack DeJohnette, Lizz Wright, Jason Moran, and Regina Carter, and appeared with Wilson in the 2003 PBS series Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues. As a leader he heads the Marvin Sewell Group, which released The Worker's Dance in 2005.
