Marquis Hill

Marquis Hill is one of the leading jazz trumpeters of his generation, a composer and bandleader who won the Thelonious Monk International Trumpet Competition in 2014. Born in Chicago in 1987, he took up the trumpet as a child and went on to earn degrees from Northern Illinois University and DePaul University before building a career rooted in the city's rich jazz tradition. His music blends post-bop trumpet with hip-hop, R&B, neo-soul, and Chicago house, drawing on influences from Dizzy Gillespie, Donald Byrd, Woody Shaw, and Kenny Dorham. He leads the Marquis Hill Blacktet, formed in 2011, and recorded The Way We Play for Concord following his Monk Competition win. He also serves on the jazz faculty at Berklee College of Music.
