Kabelo Mokhatla

Kabelo Mokhatla

Kabelo Mokhatla is a South African drummer and composer based in New York, whose playing joins the rhythmic language of his home country to a searching, open-ended approach to jazz. Born in Tembisa, he began drumming at the Moses Molelekwa Arts Foundation and was selected for the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Band in 2019 and again in 2022. The Hugh Masekela Heritage Scholarship brought him to the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with Kendrick Scott and completed a bachelor's degree in 2024. His debut album The Key to Authenticity, released in 2023, drew four Mzantsi Jazz Awards nominations, and he followed it with the EP Dot Series. In New York he has worked in pianist Nduduzo Makhathini's trio and appeared at Dizzy's Club and The Jazz Gallery.
