Jason Marshall

Jason Marshall is a baritone saxophonist rooted in the bebop tradition, known for a sound that folds soul, R&B, and funk into straight-ahead jazz. He has long anchored the baritone chair in the Mingus Big Band, and his playing has reached stages and recordings with Roy Hargrove, Aretha Franklin, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Abdullah Ibrahim, Kurt Elling, and The Roots. He moved to New York in 2003 after studies at The New School and Queens College's Aaron Copland School of Music, and his teachers included baritone specialists Hamiett Bluiett, Ronnie Cuber, and Gary Smulyan. He led his own date New Beginnings in 2022 and teaches at Montclair State University and The New School.
