Drew Gress

Drew Gress is one of the most in-demand double bassists on the New York jazz scene, prized for a warm, singing tone and an improviser's ear that moves easily between lyrical mainstream playing and downtown experimentation. Born in 1959 in Trenton, New Jersey and raised in the Philadelphia area, he studied at Towson State University and the Manhattan School of Music before establishing himself in New York. As a leader he has recorded with his group Jagged Sky, beginning with the 1998 album Heyday, and he has appeared on well over a hundred recordings, four of them Grammy-nominated. His long list of collaborators includes Fred Hersch, Tim Berne, Uri Caine, Ravi Coltrane, Dave Douglas, John Hollenbeck, and Sylvie Courvoisier.
