Dean Torrey

Dean Torrey is a double bassist who has anchored the New York jazz scene since moving to the city in 2014. Born in Connecticut in 1992, he studied the instrument privately with bassists Doug Weiss, Scott Colley, and Joe Sanders during his college years. He is a longstanding member of pianist Micah Thomas's trio, recording on the albums Tide (2020) and Reveal (2023) alongside drummer Kayvon Gordon. Rooted in the jazz tradition, his playing is known for a grounding, supportive presence that his bandmates prize, and he works widely as a sideman across New York's clubs.
