David Ambrosio

David Ambrosio is a New York bassist and educator, a longtime fixture of the city's freelance jazz scene. He leads Civil Disobedience, a project drawn from the progressive Blue Note writing of the late 1960s by composers such as Bobby Hutcherson, Jackie McLean, Stanley Cowell and Joe Chambers, and issued an album under that name in 2026 with Donny McCaslin, Ingrid Jensen, Bruce Barth and Victor Lewis. His trio with saxophonist Loren Stillman and drummer Russ Meissner made Gone in 2014 and Four on the Road for Fresh Sound New Talent in 2018. He also co-leads 40Twenty and Grupo Los Santos, performing in Cuba with the latter in 2001, and studied Afro-Cuban batá drumming for fourteen years with masters including Carlos Aldama. Trained in classical composition and jazz performance, he has worked with Kenny Werner, Joe Lovano, Terry Gibbs and Ralph Alessi, and teaches at Hunter College and the New York Jazz Workshop.
