Daniel Duke

Daniel Duke is an upright bassist based in New York City, a fixture of the West Village jazz scene through longstanding residencies at Smalls and Mezzrow. He has worked the bass full-time since 2012, playing in styles that range from traditional swing to bebop and the avant-garde, and has anchored trio settings led by pianists including Sacha Perry, Michael Kanan, and Davis Whitfield. Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to parents who both taught classical piano, he took up the bass as a teenager and was working professionally with jazz, rock, and salsa bands in Minneapolis by the age of eighteen. His resume spans Birdland, Dizzy's, Smoke, and Minton's, and he has accompanied artists such as Jane Monheit and the Anderson brothers on stages across the United States and abroad.
