Amina Figarova

Amina Figarova is an Azerbaijan-born jazz pianist and composer known for the harmonically rich post-bop of her long-running sextet, a group built around her writing and her husband Bart Platteau on flutes. Born in 1964 in Baku, she trained as a classical concert pianist at the Baku Conservatory before turning to jazz, studying at the Rotterdam Conservatory and then at Berklee College of Music, where she met Platteau. Her albums include Come Escape with Me (2005), Blue Whisper (2015), and Road to the Sun (2019), with a working band that has featured trumpeter Alex Pope Norris. Her music draws on the forward-looking tradition of Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, and Wayne Shorter, framed by a classical sense of structure and color. She is based in New York City.
