Alphonso Horne

Alphonso Horne is a New York trumpeter, composer, and educator best known as the leader of Alphonso Horne and the Gotham Kings, a band that traces the early history of jazz through the music of King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band and the young Louis Armstrong. Raised in Jacksonville, Florida, he graduated from Florida State University in 2010 and earned a master's degree in jazz from The Juilliard School in 2013, the same year Wynton Marsalis named him to a list of promising young players called Who's Got Next. He toured with Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and appeared on the 2014 PBS special with Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga. A two-time Grammy-nominated player, he also took a cameo role in the 2019 film Bolden. Horne draws on the virtuosity of the New Orleans brass tradition while working across the wider jazz repertoire, and he has taught jazz trumpet on the faculty of Rowan University.
